Resource Team Updates - May 2011

SVP’s Resource Teams have been hard at work! The Resource Teams assist our Investees as well as other nonprofits in San Diego to achieve performance targets and desired outcomes in key capacity building areas. If you have experience in a particular area or would like to learn more about a particular area, consider joining a team. The time commitment is up to you. It can be as easy as a 2 hour brainstorming meeting or a more in-depth 3 month project – you determine how you’d like to get involved based on your interests and availability. Reality Changers alum is the latest YouTube sensation

A little over 10 years ago, Jorge Narvaez was a class-cutting, troublemaking Kroc Middle School kid who was bound for nowhere good. But instead of joining a gang, the Clairemont teen was an inaugural member of Reality Changers, an organization that gives motivated inner-city students the academic, financial and emotional resources to go to college. With the help of Reality Changers and scholarships, Narvaez became the first member of his family to go to college.

Second Year Investee: Tariq Khamsia Foundation (TKF)

• TKF has retooled their Fund Development Team and hired a new Development Director, Tina Inscoe.  Congratulations Tina!
• With the help of SDSVP and Sherri Neasham, TKF went through the outcome planning process and as a result, they have created a new mission and vision. TKF recently updated their marketing pamphlet and websiteto reinforce their new focus.
• Many thanks to Wendy Gibson for serving as Lead Partner of TKF for two years! Steve Ness will continue to guide TKF through their final year as an Investee.

ElderHelp is making headlines!

We are excited to share that Investee, ElderHelp was featured in an article in the U.S. News & World Report.  ElderHelp is featured as an "aging in place" solution for the growing number of seniors in America. Executive Director, Leane Marchese explains the innovative approach of ElderHelp's service model and how it is a cost-effective solution.

First Friday: From Sesame Street, to Wall Street

SDSVP Partner and Board Member, Peg Eddy presented her popular “From Sesame Street, to Wall Street” at First Friday on March 4. Peg outlined practical strategies to use to increase financial fitness in future generations. A fee-only Certified Financial Planner, Peg helped attendees examine their own money "psyches" as they learned how to become better financial role models for young people and be better stewards of their own time, talents, and treasures. Saving, spending, investing, and sharing were discussed, with a special emphasis on philanthropy and how to involve future generations in active sharing arrangements.

SDSVP and Gumpert Foundation bring For Impact fundraising workshop to San Diego

On March 17, Investees of San Diego Social Venture Partners and the William Gumpert Foundation participated in the For Impactworkshop led by Nick Fellers.  The session gave participants practical and field-tested ideas with "how to" instruction to make a quantum leap in funding. Ultimately, Nick drove home the concept that impact drives income. Our Investees are seeing results already:

"Thanks very much for the seminar. Within 24 hours, it helped! I met with two friends of the organization and applied the For Impact advice. They walked away loving our program and excited to get involved. The Partner 4-1-1

Del Mar's Dog Beach is sporting a multi-level water fountain, with spigots for people and dogs alike, thanks to the generosity of Richard & Sharon Bockoff, who donated the fountain through the Del Mar Foundation in honor of their dogs, Walter and Sophie.Click here for more pictures of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Emeritus Investee, the Human Development Foundation recently recognized JoAnne Berg and Scott Tritt in their newsletter. JoAnne assisted with their financial reporting systems and Scott applied his expertise in television news production to produce a new informative video.  Way to go!
