Reality Changers alum is the latest YouTube sensation

From The San Diego Union-Tribune
January 14, 2011
by Karla Peterson

A little over 10 years ago, Jorge Narvaez was a class-cutting, troublemaking Kroc Middle School kid who was bound for nowhere good. But instead of joining a gang, the Clairemont teen was an inaugural member of Reality Changers, an organization that gives motivated inner-city students the academic, financial and emotional resources to go to college. With the help of Reality Changers and scholarships, Narvaez became the first member of his family to go to college.

First Friday: From Sesame Street, to Wall Street

SDSVP Partner and Board Member, Peg Eddy presented her popular “From Sesame Street, to Wall Street” at First Friday on March 4. Peg outlined practical strategies to use to increase financial fitness in future generations. A fee-only Certified Financial Planner, Peg helped attendees examine their own money "psyches" as they learned how to become better financial role models for young people and be better stewards of their own time, talents, and treasures. Saving, spending, investing, and sharing were discussed, with a special emphasis on philanthropy and how to involve future generations in active sharing arrangements.

SDSVP and Gumpert Foundation bring For Impact fundraising workshop to San Diego

On March 17, Investees of San Diego Social Venture Partners and the William Gumpert Foundation participated in the For Impactworkshop led by Nick Fellers.  The session gave participants practical and field-tested ideas with "how to" instruction to make a quantum leap in funding. Ultimately, Nick drove home the concept that impact drives income. Our Investees are seeing results already:

"Thanks very much for the seminar. Within 24 hours, it helped! I met with two friends of the organization and applied the For Impact advice. They walked away loving our program and excited to get involved. They made a contribution a day later that was not 2x or 4x, but 10x what it has been in the past and we are meeting again next month to discuss how else they can help our efforts in the community.” -Megan Baehrens, Development Coordinator, San Diego Coastkeeper

San Diego Social Venture Partners announces support for military nonprofits to strengthen returning service members and their families

SAN DIEGO (March 30, 2011) – San Diego Social Venture Partners (SDSVP) will partner with the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA and REBOOT (By the National Veterans Transition Services, Inc.) to help ease the burden local service members and their families face as a result of ongoing military engagements overseas. Each organization will receive grants and in-kind gifts of more than $600,000 as part of SDSVP's three year commitment to the organizations.
San Diego Social Venture Partners is a group of local professionals who donate their money and expertise to help nonprofits become successful and sustainable.
"We're excited about our involvement, and the opportunity to support their crucial missions," says SDSVP Executive Director Peggy Kidd. "The organizations couldn't be more different. One has been an anchor in the community for decades, the other is a start-up planning to scale their programs to a national level. We believe there's an opportunity for both to grow their impact."
Camp Pendleton ASYMCA is dedicated to providing support to families stationed on or near Camp Pendleton. Their programs enhance the quality of life for military families and reduce stress by providing support for junior enlisted service members, spouses and children.

REBOOT recognizes the importance of providing returning service members with an effective way to transition back to civilian life, both physically and mentally. Their intensive 3-week program provides job-related assistance and counseling.
Using the venture capital approach, SDSVP's unique model provides nonprofits with a plan for long-term success.  This is especially crucial today, as the economy is requiring all organizations - especially nonprofits - to do more with less.
“What makes SDSVP different from other grantmakers is that our members stand behind our donations with their business expertise to help the nonprofits we invest in succeed," Peggy Kidd continues. "We make multi-year financial and human resource commitments and we educate our partners about philanthropy and how to best address the needs in this community."
